Race 6 - Report for 12th June 2008
Numbers were slightly down for race number six, whether this was due to unforeseen circumstances or the onset of winter I’m not sure, but it was safe to say it was not unduly warm. A Northerly breeze had blown intermittently all day, I’m assured by everyone that it was blowing it’s socks off outside every office in the region, but not I might add at Brogborough, with its own windless mini climate, due mainly to the trees acting like the Thames Barrier to the would be hurricane.
So yet again it was long boards, Slalom seems a distant dream that never gets any nearer!
Allotting boards was the first task, always a problem in itself, all seemed sorted, but with the late arrival of an over excited RooTim things had to be changed. Much to the delight of Eeyore 2 (Phil) whom found his super tanker dragged from his grasp and replaced with a race board. His whole mood changed. Pinning on a brand new tail he headed for the shore with his new steed, even stepping over a small thistle ( always a good sign)
John Andel asked if he could have a race board as it was his birthday!
God any excuse!
Chris said could he use his own race board as he only had up an 8.5 (could he hell, I knew full well that he had probably been highly tuning it all day, graphiting the bottom of the board etc, gullible I may be, but I’m not that daft. He was given a Relic from the Rack).
The start saw Keith pre-empt giving John the water bumps for his birthday, by knocking him in before they had even started.
RooTim was of course over excited again and was ramming anyone or anything that got in his way
But above all this mayhem sailed a man that no one knew how to stop. Andre sailed gracefully into the lead and there he stayed, oblivious of the mayhem behind him. Unbelievably Eeyore two was in second, his new tail swinging behind him. Helium Mike and the Hoff stared in disbelief
‘Who was this upstart that dared to mix it with the BIG BOYS!’
Just behind them saw Paul sporting a ‘Reflex sail
“Are Dinosaur sails allowed?” I ask
“Bet it doesn’t measure!” I muttered
But was assured that it had been shrunk slightly to the correct size! Not that he’s taking this Thursday night racing seriously (perish the thought!)
The whole fleet converged on the first mark together (with the exception of the dripping John and Keith) an element of chaos then ensued not helped by Paul suddenly realising he was heading for the wrong mark and careering in on a very broad reach, on reaching his goal he was aware that there was in fact ‘No room at the Inn’ and was forced to miss the mark all together, enforcing a reluctant 360 degree circle to round the mark correctly
Despite the crowd most seemed to negotiate the first hurdle without too much trouble, unless of course you’re a girl which an excitable RooTim jumping on you when you least expect it. Annette was the first to experience this phenomenon (she wasn’t to be the last)
At the end of lap one Andre sailed along still commanding a good lead, an overjoyed Eeyore was not only second, but more importantly miles in front of his arch rival Eeyore 2 (yours truly). Third saw Mike with the Hoff breathing down his neck and what’s more (and this is official) TAKING IT SERIOUSLY!
5th saw Paul steadily moving up the field, while Sig (Graham) was battling it out with Eeyore 2. A bit of a gap then before RooTim was seen flapping his sail vigorously in an attempt to pick up speed. A female scream of anguish drifts across the lake, as once again as he over does it and collapses in a heap on top of Jo (well he seems to be enjoying himself tonight!)
At the end of lap two the race officers considered shortening the course, but after some deliberation (and after earlier consultation with the lake manager) decided against it. So we all trundled round again!
There really was no way anyone was going to catch Andre. Eeyore two had peaked two early and his mood was visibly changing, his ears were now down and his tail hung limply in the water (causing I might add considerable drag). Mike now took over 2nd while the serious Hoff did his level best to catch him. Paul having made up considerable ground seemed content with 4th place and made no further move on the leaders.
The race neared its climax and it was of coarse Andre that secured his fourth first place of the season
Mike held off a late Hoffy challenge while Paul took fourth place.
There then ensued a battle of the donkeys, with a RooTim and a Sig also bidding for that much sort after 5th place. On the last beat I was aware that Eeyore two was definitely flagging (not helped by a soggy tail) . so that it was Eeyore one that pumped his way across the line with RooTim just behind flapping his Crisp packet sail that had definitely been over down hauled and was generally disturbing the peace and wild life of the lake. Old Sig came next and all that was left was a very sad donkey gently circling and going nowhere in particular. Chris came in 9th having held that position all race, so the race board didn’t help there! Of course had some unnamed bastard let him use his own board, then things might have been different.
10th saw Jo get the better of her rival after an earlier mounting of each other’s boards (the mind boggles!).
Keth came in celebrating 11th place
“Hey folks I wasn’t last”
A mile stone in Keith’s racing prowess!
Birthday Boy John wandered in 12th while a slightly wet Tigger in the shape of Annette came 13th
Mark had had a difficult race, not helped by someone knobbling his mast foot when he wasn’t looking. It’s very difficult to sail with the rig wedged between ones toes, due to the lack of a rather important nut!
So race 6 complete. Slalom seems a distant dream
WE DON’T NEED SUN
